Father
Wladislaw and Father Ulick in the house we are seeking to rebuild at Bender.
At the moment this room is used as Dining Room Craftroom and everything else.
We had lunch here and you can (just) see the children’s craftwork in the background.
On
Easter Monday (28 April 2005), eight of us met at Heathrow shortly after 5.0 am
to fly to Budapest on the first stage of our pilgrimage to Moldova and to see
our friends in our linked parish of Holy Cross, Bender. Kathleen and Peter
Coates were, of course, very familiar with the journey as they had lived there
for so many years before coming to St. James’s. Fr. Ulick had visited once
before – last year with Deacon Peter – but even he was a little apprehensive.
Patrick Deane and Edward Cornthwaite, who were confirmed last year (3rd
July 2004) when Bishop Anton came over from Moldova, represented our young people.
Liz Deane joined the group with some enthusiasm to look after her son and Edward,
while Patrick Rogers and Alf Stiegler represented our parish and Ilkeston parish
respectively. We were a mixed bunch but soon gelled and found our way through
Transit at Budapest to catch our second flight of the day to Chişinău.
(That’s the capital of Moldova and pronounced Kishinow!). This was also
our first chance to sample Moldovan wine as it was served with a quite acceptable
hot meal and some of the party even managed to get Champagne! We arrived
at Chişinău just about on time and were met with a minibus to take us
to the Episcopie where we were to stay. We were in the guest rooms
of the Bishop’s house, next door to the Cathedral where Peter was ordained.
Fr. Ulick celebrated Mass for us in the Bishop’s chapel and we were able to enjoy
supper in the guest’s dining room before collapsing into well deserved sleep.
